Notice: After major OS upgrades the files under /etc/ppp are often removed, and that the VPN setup must be done again.

ECE VPN - MacOS Setup Instruction

You can use the ECE VPN from MacOS using your VPN login and password and a preshared secret . Note that the username is NOT your UTORid, and the passord is not your ECE linux password, nor your Samba password. THe VPN has separate logins and passwords. If you have ECE Unix/mail account and the account was created after Oct. 14, 2016, the prehared secret is included in the welcome email when your Unix/mail account was created. If you need a login on the ECE VPN or you don't know what is the preshared secret, contact ECEHELP at ece.utoronto.ca with your name, status and supervisor and we will set one up for you.

1. Download this file to the desktop; in Safari, control-click the link to choose "Download linked file as..."
2. Open a terminal window.
3. At the command prompt in Terminal, copy the downloaded file to the folder /etc/ppp/ by using the following command. (The prompt "mymac:~ Myusername$" is an example. Your Terminal will show the name of your Mac and your login name as your prompt. The prompt is already on your screen and is not part of what you need to type. Just type the command shown in bold, beginning with the word "sudo")
   • mymac:~ Myusername$   sudo cp ./Desktop/ip-up /etc/ppp/ip-up
   • Give your Mac password to allow the sudo command.
   • If you see "file not found" or other error, check your typing and try again
4. Once the file is copied, in Terminal type this command at the prompt:
   • mymac:~ Myusername$   sudo chmod u+x /etc/ppp/ip-up
   • If you get an error such as "file not found", make sure step 3 is completed with no error.
5. Under the "Apple menu" choose "System Preferences"
6. Click on "Network"
7. On the left panel, click on "+" sign
8. Under Interface, press the pull down menu and select "VPN", change VPN Type as "L2TP over IPsec" and then enter a name that you will remember for "Service Name"
9. Under "Server Address", enter: "vpn-gw.ece.utoronto.ca"
10. Under "Account Name", enter your ece vpn username
11. Click on "Authentication Settings ..." and under "password", enter your ece vpn password
12. Under "Shared Secret", enter the VPN preshared key, contact ecehelp if you don't know what it is.
13. IMPORTANT: Click on "Advanced ..." and under "Options," *UNcheck* "Send all traffic over VPN connection" -- if you miss this, you lose internet access while linked to ECE VPN!
14. Now you may click on connect and connect to ece vpn
