How to Use Windows 10: Setting Up a VPN connection

Preparation

In order to setup an ECE vpn connection to make use of the internal resource of ECE research groups, you must know your vpn username, vpn password and a preshared secret. If your Unix/email account was created before Oct. 14, 2016, please go to the welcome email for the information, otherwise please contact ecehelp.

Setting Up a VPN Connection

1. Right Click on the Windows button in the lower left corner, Select Control Panel, then goto Network and Sharing Center. Click Setup a new connection or network

2. Click Connect to a workplace, Click Next to continue

3. Click "set up a new connection or network"

4.INput internet address 128.100.241.58 and the VPN name "ECE VPN". Click Create to create the vpn. If you use different VPN name here, you should use the same name in step 5.

5. Now go to "control panel" --> Network and internet -> in the left panel, go to Change adapter settings

Right CLick the new created VPN "ECE VPN" or "ECE VPN L2TP", Select Properties

6. Select the Tab "Security " , Choose VPN type L2TP/IPsec, and in authetication section choose Allow these protocols and enable MS-CHAP2

click "advanced setting" in the same window

7. In the new popup window, select the first option and input the ECE preshared secret, please contact ecehelp if you don't know what it is

Now back to the former window, and Select the tab "Networking".

Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP4) and click on "Properties".

Select "Advanced" in the window "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP4) and click on "Advanced".

Under the window "Advanced TCP/IP Settings", UNCHECK "Use default gateway on remote network".

Click "Ok" to close all the windows.

8. Right Click Windows Icon in the lower bottom bar , Click "network connections" then "ECE VPN" to connect to ECE VPN.

Note: You don't have to connect to ECE VPN server if you don't use ECE internal resource
