I.I.T-Madras

I spent four memorable years (1963-67) at IIT-Madras(IITM). It was Prof.S.Sampath who persuaded me and another friend to join the first M.Tech students' batch after we finished our B.E.(Telecom.) at College of Engineering, Guindy in 1963. The two years saw us with some of the best teachers I had ever seen : Professors S.Sampath, M.K.Achuthan, P.Venkat Rao, V.G.K.Murti and the list goes on. After finishing the M.Tech program in 1965, I stayed on as a Research Scholar (under the supervision of Dr.M.K.Achuthan) and a Part-time Lecturer for 2 more years. In many ways, I think my interest in an academic career probably sprang from those experiences. For some reasons, we could not get our M.Tech. degrees in the 65 Convocation and it was in the 3rd Convocation ( 30 July 1966) we got our degrees. In a way, it was a boon, because Sir C.V.Raman ,was the Chief Guest at that Convocation. I give below some related pictures.

  • I obtained the First Rank in M.Tech and hence was awarded the Siemen's prize during the convocation.
  • The First Rank Cerificate
  • Siemens' Prize. . I remember Sir C.V.Raman smiling and asking me , " The prize seems very heavy? ". I did not expect him to talk to me and was taken aback for a second; then I remember blurting out something like " I guess knowledge IS heavy, at times, Sir".
  • Prof.S.Sampath announcing my name and giving me the M.Tech degree cerificate.
  • The 4th Convocation(1967) Souvenir published several pictures from our (3rd) Convocation.( SirCVRaman pictures given previously are from that souvenir.) That souvenir also listed my very first research paper (based on my M.Tech. thesis) in the list of research papers published in the year 66-67. My first paper listed among others in the 4th Convocation Souvenir.
